Saudi 'sources' reveal real reason why Steven Gerrard left Al Ettifaq as new information comes to light

Saudi 'sources' reveal real reason why Steven Gerrard left Al Ettifaq as new information comes to light

Gerrard spent 18 months in charge of the Saudi Pro League side.

A new report has provided further insight into Steven Gerrard's departure from Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq.

The 44-year-old, who joined Al Ettifaq in July 2023, was one of the highest-paid managers in world football during his time in Saudi Arabia, earning a salary of around £15 million per year.

He guided the club to a sixth-place finish in his first campaign but after winning just five of their 17 league matches this season, Gerrard left Al Ettifaq by mutual consent on January 30.

Samer Al Misehal, the club president at Al Ettifaq, said Gerrard transformed the club during his 18-month spell in charge.

"Sometimes things don't go as planned, but the firm foundations he helped build will guarantee a bright future in the long term," he said.

"He changed the club for the better and that will never be forgotten. This decision, made with mutual respect and in agreement is in the best interest of both Steven and the club as we move forward."

Since his much-talked-about departure, new information has come to light in a report by The Athletic.

According to the publication, Gerrard 'began to fall out of love with the project' at Al Ettifaq and 'it was clear to others that leaving had been on his mind for some time'.

Staff changes, injuries and poor form were also factors behind him leaving, although his exit was said to be mutually agreed and amicable, as pointed out by Al Misehal in the above statement.

Gerrard also expressed his frustration at the so-called 'squad-building process at the Dammam-based side.

Speaking about his time at the club, the former Liverpool midfielder opened up on his time at Al Ettifaq. "Football is unpredictable and sometimes things don't go the way we want," he said.

"However, I leave with great respect for the club and the country. I have no doubt that the work being done will bring success in the future and I wish the team the very best for the rest of the season."

Gerrard added: "From the first day I was warmly welcomed and I have enjoyed the chance to work in a new country with a different culture. Overall I have learnt a lot and it's been a positive experience personally and for my family as well."
