Ruben Amorim could hand forgotten man his Man Utd debut this weekend

The player has not featured for the senior side in a competitive match.

New Man United head coach Ruben Amorim could be set to hand one player his competitive debut for the club on Sunday.

Amorim, 39, will take charge of his new side for the first time at Portman Road against Ipswich Town on Sunday, 24 November, having finally started in his new role on Monday, 11 November.

As expected, fans have paid close attention to training footage released by the club this week as they try to piece together his first starting XI - with the Portuguese having ‘taken a liking’ to one winger in particular.

During his successful spell at his former club, Sporting, he regularly employed a 3-4-3 formation - something that is not widely used by the current crop of Premier League managers.

His preferred tactic puts the emphasis on his defenders, with the full-backs made to work hard in both attack and defence to avoid exposing one of the three centre-backs.

Former United boss Erik ten Hag had a preferred centre-back pairing of Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martinez with Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof as back-up.

However, this weekend, a forgotten man may come into the squad.

According to reports from Daily Mail, Leny Yoro has featured during Amorim’s training drills this week and was even ‘pulled out’ of an Under-21 squad, who were due to face Altrincham on Tuesday as per The Sun.

Yoro, 19, joined United in a £52m deal after impressing for French club Lille during the 2023/24 Ligue 1 season.

Fans were excited at his arrival, but he sustained a fractured metatarsal while playing a game against Arsenal in pre-season, meaning he has failed to make his competitive debut for United.

The club announced that the defender returned to full first-team training in early November.

Whether he is ‘match-fit’ is still unclear, but it is possible that Yoro could play a part in Sunday’s fixture.

Upon joining United in July 2024, Yoro admitted that a former Red Devils and England defender ‘helped’ him make his choice of joining the club.

"He [Rio Ferdinand] called me,” Yoro told Manchester United’s official website.

"First of all, I was really impressed to speak with him and, yeah, we spoke like 10 minutes about Man United, so he helped me a lot to make my choice.

“It was really an honour to speak with him.

"He spoke to me about the club, and that this is a historic club with a big story, and if I go there, I need to fight for the club, to be ready, because this is the biggest club in the world. For me, it was really good to speak about this."
