Richard Keys claims Man Utd have made 'cataclysmic mistake' that could cost Ruben Amorim dearly

Richard Keys claims Man Utd have made 'cataclysmic mistake' that could cost Ruben Amorim dearly

The former Sky Sports presenter gave his thoughts on the Red Devils' new boss.

Former Sky Sports presenter Richard Keys has issued Ruben Amorim a stark warning ahead of the Portuguese's first game in charge of Manchester United this Sunday.

Keys, 67, was best known for his almost two-decade stint working for Sky Sports.

He is currently working for Middle Eastern-based channel beIN Sports alongside former professional footballer Andy Gray.

The pair present English and European football coverage from Doha, Qatar.

Alongside his work on TV, Keys regularly writes a blog giving his opinion on football’s biggest storylines.

Like most journalists, he has not been shy about his take on Manchester United – and has expressed how he thinks United keeping former boss Erik ten Hag for so long will cost new man Amorim.

On November 19, he explained how there is ‘nothing’ left for Amorim when referring to potential transfer funds that may prove useful come January.

“Every briefing coming out of OT [Old Trafford] underlines what a cataclysmic mistake it was keeping [Erik] ten Toast [Hag] last summer,” Keys posted on X.

“They let him spend another £200m+ on rubbish & now there’s nothing for Amorim. Somebody in the brains trust should be fired. There’s nothing for Amorim to work with.”

The “rubbish” Keys is referring to is presumable the summer signings - several of which Ten Hag had worked with at Ajax before he joined United.

The Dutchman linked back up with Matthijs de Ligt (£42.9m) and Noussair Mazraoui (£12.8m, not including add-ons), as well as bringing in his compatriot Joshua Zirkzee (£36.5m) and young defender Leny Yoro (£52m), who sustained an ankle injury in late July and is yet to make his competitive debut for the Red Devils.

Uruguayan midfielder Manuel Ugarte’s performances (£42m) have also been relatively underwhelming, considering his hefty price tag.

Apart from some promising signs from Mazraoui, the other recruits have failed to live up to the heights expected of them when they arrived in the summer of 2024.

Amorim will take charge of his first game as head coach of United on Sunday, 24 November, when the Red Devils will face a tough test against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.

The 39-year-old will be expecting a raucous atmosphere in what will be the Tractor Boys’ first Premier League meeting with the 20-time league title winners since April 2002.
