Luke Shaw injury update given as England boss Gareth Southgate sweats over fitness ahead of Euro 2024

Luke Shaw injury update given as England boss Gareth Southgate sweats over fitness ahead of Euro 2024

England have received a major update on the fitness of Luke Shaw for Euro 2024.

England have received an update on the fitness of Luke Shaw ahead of Euro 2024.

Shaw, 28, was a shock inclusion in Gareth Southgate's provisional 33-man squad for the upcoming international tournament in Germany.

The left-back - who scored the opening goal in the Euro 2020 final against Italy at Wembley Stadium - missed 34 games due to muscle injuries in the 2023/24 campaign for Manchester United.

However, he was included in the England bosses plans due to the lack of options he has to call upon in the position.

Throughout recent fixtures, Southgate has utilised Kieran Trippier, Joe Gomez and Ezri Konsa in the position - while admitting Shaw was a "long shot" to make the final squad.

The defender has not been in action since February but could now be set to provide his country with a major injury boost before they jet off to Germany.

Speaking ahead of the 3-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Southgate claimed Shaw was "progressing well" in his recovery.

The progress hasn't stopped there, either. According to The Telegraph, the left-back has now returned to the training pitch and will now follow a tailor-made training plan in order to regain fitness as fast as possible.

The deadline for submitting the final 26-man squad for Euro 2024 is 11pm on Friday, June 7. Whether or not Shaw makes the cut, remains to be seen.

“There’s 33 who are desperate to be involved and we know the qualities that he has and absolutely what he’s capable of doing,” Southgate said this week. “That’s not in any question. As I said (before), he’s a player that we love having with the group and, for us, he’s a great character to work with.”

Shaw has a total of 31 England caps to his name and three goals across these fixtures.
