Liverpool fans name the player FSG must sign after being rejected by Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool have been rejected by Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi.

Liverpool fans have picked out the player FSG must go for after missing out on Martin Zubimendi.

Over the last week or so, Liverpool have been heavily linked with a move for Spain and Real Sociedad star Zubimendi.

It was reported that Liverpool had identified the 25-year-old as their primary transfer target after deciding to strengthen their options in midfield.

However, despite the Reds willing to pay the release clause in the Spaniard’s contract, Zubimendi rejected the chance to move to Anfield.

After missing out on their top target, Liverpool fans have called on the club to try and sign Alan Varela from Portuguese club Porto.

One fan said: “Martin this, Zubimendi that...Alan Varela.”

Another tweeted: “There better be a pivot. Alan Varela in a nice bow of ribbon by lunchtime please.”

A third fan added: “I’m not sure what data Liverpool used in pursuing Martin Zubimendi, but after watching several clips, I believe Alan Varela is a better option. His dribbling, skills, passing, tackling, and ball retention are far more impressive than Zubimendi’s.”

Someone else wrote: “Alan Varela is an elite #6. Surely a viable and attainable option who would jump at the chance to play alongside his countryman - Alexis Mac Allister.”

A fifth commented: “Alan Varela is the next best out there that we should be looking at and Bruno Guimaraes is obviously a good player but doubt there is any chance of it happening.”

Another fan added: “RIchard Hughes should be meeting the release clause as we speak for Alan Varela given there's no time to negotiate now apparently.”

Speaking about the No.6 position, manager Arne Slot said: “We have seen mostly Wata and Ryan there, and in the previous game even Dominik was a bit lower.

“I have quite a good idea which player suits there at this moment in my opinion best.”

He added: “But we are only one week working together with some players. Sometimes you feel this is the best No. 6 but then the combination with the other two might not work out that well.”
