Jorge Mendes, the agent of Benfica star Darwin Nunez, is having a meeting with Manchester United manager Eric Ten Hag in Portugal, with United planning on stealing the player from under Liverpool’s nose, according to reports
Recently, much of the talk revolving around a Nunez transfer has been about Liverpool snapping up the player, with Klopp reportedly very keen on the 22 year-old Benfica striker who has had a head-turning season, where he has bagged 34 times from 41 appearances.
Even more impressive when you consider that he not only scored these goals in Liga Portugal, but also in the Champions League, where he netted 6 times from 10 games. A factor which has evidently attracted Liverpool, with Sadio Mane’s potential departure having Liverpool in need of attacking reinforcement.

However, as reports state, Manchester United are planning to hijack Liverpool’s move for the Uruguayan, with Ten Hag holding a meeting with the player’s agent in Portugal.
The United board have promised Ten Hag a significant budget for his first window with the Reds, with Nunez seemingly the first piece of the puzzle for the newly appointed Dutchman.

However, well-known journalist Pedro Sepúlveda reports that Nunez very much wants Champions League football. Something United cannot offer the player. A factor which may well persuade the 22 year-old to choose Liverpool over the Red Devils.
The one thing United may be able to offer is a higher wage, with the club having a significantly higher wage structure then their Merseyside rivals. As it stands, Liverpool’s offer is €100m to Benfica and a 5 year contract. It remains to be seen whether United will rival this.
