Newcastle United are interested in signing midfielder Joao Gomes, though the Brazilian has admitted he would love to join Liverpool, according to reports.
The Reds have endured a torrid start to the season, and are currently languishing in 6th place, seven points from a Champions League spot and some 16 points from league leaders Arsenal.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been in the market for a new midfielder in January, with a number of their current crop old, out of form or leaving. Indeed, fringe players Naby Keita, Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain and Arthur Melo are all likely to leave at the end of the season.

In turn, Liverpool have reportedly identified 19-year-old England star Jude Bellingham as their top target, though any deal will likely occur in the summer.
Furthermore, the Anfield club are thought to be keen on Enzo Fernandez, however Premier League rivals Chelsea are thought to be the most likely side to land the World Cup star’s signature.
In turn, Newcastle target Gomes could be an ideal alternative to the Argentine and has in the past expressed a desire to join Liverpool.

According to reputable journalist Rudy Galetti, Eddie Howe’s side are monitoring Gomes, a 21-year-old Brazilian midfielder plying his trade at Flamengo.

Meanwhile, Spanish publication SPORT have claimed that Klopp’s side are also pursuing the player. The publication added the youngster has a release clause worth £52million.
In a head-to-head battle between the pair, Liverpool would be the more likely side to get a deal over the line, given Gomes has expressed his admiration for the Merseyside club and its star midfielder Thiago.
The Copa Libertadores winner, who has been likened to United star Casemiro, said: “I look at Thiago Alcantara."
Speaking to ESPN, Gomes added: “Liverpool is a team I would play for. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream. My biggest dream in football.”
