Ex-Premier League star who scored Old Trafford winner vs Man Utd open to joining Wrexham

Ex-Premier League star who scored Old Trafford winner vs Man Utd open to joining Wrexham

Wrexham could recruit a big name over the summer.

A former Premier League star has admitted he would be open to joining Wrexham this summer.

It's shaping up to a be a busy summer at the SToK Racecourse as Wrexham prepare for life in League One.

The Welsh club has enjoyed a stunning resurgence under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and last month that continued as they secured a second successive promotion.

Phil Parkinson's side finished second in League Two to return to the third tier after a 19-year absence, and next term they will have eyes firmly set on the Championship.

There's no denying the fact that serious investment from the club's Hollywood owners helped make back-to-back promotions possible.

In 2023-24, Wrexham's weekly wage bill was higher than all but five teams playing in the division above.

Last week the Red Dragons released their retained list, with club stalwarts Ben Tozer and Luke Young set to leave when their contracts expire this summer.

Former Premier League winger James McClean has been offered a new contract, and he could be joined at Wrexham by his former West Brom and Stoke City teammate Saido Berahino.

When asked during a Q&A on X whether he would consider joining Wrexham when his contract at Cyprus top flight side AEL Limassol expires this summer, Berahino replied: "Why not."

The striker was at one time one of the most promising young talents in the Premier League, and in 2014-15 netted 14 league goals for West Brom.

However, his form tailed off the following season after West Brom ignored his transfer request and rejected offers from Tottenham Hotspur.

Berahino fell out of favour completely in 2016-17 and served an eight-week FA ban for testing positive for recreational drugs.

He was sold to Stoke City in 2017, before spending time with Belgian sides Zulte Waregem and Royal Charleroi, Sheffield Wednesday and most recently AEL Limassol.

Berahino, now 30, scored 23 goals and provided three assists in 133 Premier League appearances.
