Jose Mourinho tipped to follow hero’s footsteps with ‘emotional’ Premier League return after Roma sacking

Jose Mourinho tipped to follow hero’s footsteps with ‘emotional’ Premier League return after Roma sacking

It would be an entertaining move.

Jose Mourinho has been tipped for an emotional Premier League return after leaving Roma.

On Tuesday Mourinho was sacked by Roma after two-and-a-half seasons in Italy.

The Portuguese manager joined the Giallorossi in 2021 and went on to win the Europa Conference League in his first campaign, before guiding the team to the Europa League final last season.

But defeat to AC Milan last weekend leaves the club languishing in ninth in Serie A.

With his contract set to expire this summer, Roma have decided upon a managerial change.

A club statement read: “We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club.

“We will always have great memories of his tenure at Roma, but we believe that an immediate change is in the best interests of the club.

“We wish José and his assistants all the best in their future endeavours.”

It’s unlikely Mourinho will be out of work for too long however, with journalist Dean Jones having tipped the ex-Chelsea boss to take over at Newcastle.

Jones claimed that Mourinho’s admiration for Newcastle legend legend Sir Bobby Robson could attract him to the Magpies, who are in a difficult spell under Eddie Howe.

The journalist explained to GIVEMESPORT last month: “The Bobby Robson attachment [that Mourinho has] might just give him that little tug at the heartstrings and think the guy that was my mentor in the early years, this was his place.

“This was very special to him. What if I could take this all one step further and actually deliver that trophy that they’ve been after all these years? And then I could kind of dedicate it to him.

“There’s definitely reasons I could see Mourinho being interested in this if he was to leave Roma.”

Mourinho had previously denied speculation linking him with Newcastle, insisting he was happy at Roma.

“I will tell you something I have not yet said, because I did not want to say it. I want to continue at Roma. I want to continue here. If I continue at Roma, we need to really think about what we can do with the FFP limitations,” he stated via TeamTalk.

“Perhaps it is better to work with young players and develop for the future rather than with some players who have nothing more to develop. I want to continue and we perhaps ought to think about it in a different way.

“I know the dimensions of this team, when everyone is available, we have sufficient quality to fight it out. We didn’t finish fourth last season because we reached a European final and were too stretched out. Without fundamental players, obviously it is difficult.”
