Chelsea set to sanction bizarre transfer that's confused fans as Fabrizio Romano drops surprise update

A surprise player is expected to leave Chelsea this month.

Chelsea are set to sanction a surprise transfer this month that has confused fans as Fabrizio Romano has provided an update on the proposed deal.

Chelsea have been linked with several players since the January transfer window opened, having splashed the cash last summer.

But new signings depend on outgoings, with a fire sale given the green light by Enzo Maresca, who is prepared to offload FIVE players.

And, according to Romano, Renato Veiga is also expected to leave Stamford Bridge this month.

Veiga joined Chelsea from Basel for £12 million last summer but has played a bit-part role since his arrival.

He has only played seven games in the Premier League, having recorded most of his appearances in his side's Europa Conference League campaign.

A January move is on the cards, with Romano claiming the club are open to a permanent switch despite him joining just six months ago.

Borussia Dortmund appears to be Veiga's next destination as the Bundesliga side have agreed a deal with the 21-year-old.

But Chelsea fans are shocked at Maresca allowing him to leave considering fellow left-back Ben Chilwell is also rumoured to be departing this month.

That means Chelsea would have no cover for first-choice left-back Marc Cucurella.

One X user wrote: "Chilwell is leaving and if Veiga leaves on loan, then we have no cover for Cucurella."

A second added: "Can’t understand this move, especially given Chilwell is surplus to requirements. Apart from Cucurella, what other left-backs at the club are there?"

Speaking ahead of Chelsea's game against Bournemouth on Tuesday, Maresca gave the latest on Veiga, who has expressed his desire to play at centre-back.

"At the moment, I am not aware that there is an agreement for Renato. Yesterday he was here working with us and today he will be here. At the moment, he is our player," he said via the Chelsea Chronicle.

"The only thing I can say is that we bought Renato from Basel, he has played in different positions and has played well. This has allowed him to be in the senior national team for the first time in his life. Even if he is not playing in his position, it means he can do well in the position he is playing."
