Brazil and Canada were battling for the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

Viewers were left in disbelief at what the DJ did after an altercation occurred during the women’s beach volleyball final.

On Friday night, the gold medal match in the Olympic women’s beach volleyball was contested between Brazil pair Ana Patricia Silva Ramos and Eduarda Santos Lisboa and Canada’s Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson.

In the third set of the match, things got heated as the players exchanged words and gestures at the net.

Eventually, the referee had to step in before things got out of hand.

Shortly after the incident took place, the DJ at the event decided to play John Lennon’s Imagine, which left one of the Canadian players smiling and clapping in what was a wonderful moment.

The fans in the stands also joined in as they were seen swaying their arms.

A BBC commentator said: “It’s okay, she’s smiling, the MC is trying to calm things down a bit with the music. Here we go, wonderful.”

Reacting on social media, one fan said: “All the players at the beach volleyball final started arguing so the DJ played John Lennon’s Imagine.”

Another tweeted: “Genius level work - so good.”

A third fan added: “DJ should get a gold medal too.”

Someone else wrote: “Props to the DJ for cracking them up. It's amazing how a little laughter can make everything feel better.”

A fifth commented: “Iconic moments like these are worth living to see.”

Another fan said: “This was everything… the way the song snapped them out of it had me dying and then they hugged at the end of the match and everyone lived happily ever after.”

One user added: "That Referee tried his best to control his laugh."

In the end, Brazil won the gold after winning the third set by a score of 15-11.

Switzerland and Australia faced off in the bronze medal match, with the Swiss coming away victorious after winning by two sets to nil.
