Team GB triathlete Alex Yee wins stunning gold medal as 'unbelievable' comeback completely confuses fans

Team GB triathlete Alex Yee wins stunning gold medal as 'unbelievable' comeback completely confuses fans

Yee won his second Olympic gold medal with victory in the men's triathlon.

Alex Yee has claimed Team GB's fifth gold medal of the 2024 Olympic Games with an incredible comeback in the men's triathlon event.

Yee, who won the mixed relay event at the 2020 Games in Tokyo alongside Jess Learmonth, Jonny Brownlee and Georgia Taylor-Brown, claimed his second Olympic gold medal with a stunning performance on the final lap of Wednesday's men's race in Paris.

The 26-year-old from London trailed New Zealand's Hayden Wilde by 15 seconds on the final lap.

But he somehow found the energy to reel in Wilde before racing clear to claim victory.

"How on earth has Alex Yee done that?? He was miles behind, camera suddenly flicks back and he's sprinting away to win. Unbelievable finish," journalist Charles Watts posted on X.

Other viewers were left confused as to how Yee had managed to come back at his rival so quickly without it being fully captured by the TV cameras.

"How did Yee do that!? What a freak. Bloody incredible race by Hayden Wilde too all things considered. Those commentators had gone to sleep," posted one viewer on X.

Another added: "Still can't work out how he did that!?"

While a third wrote: "Honestly what on earth just happened."

Yee, who won silver in the men's triathlon at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, collapsed to the ground after winning.

He then regained his composure to shake hands with Wilde, with the two men sharing a moment of respect at the end of the gruelling race, which was postponed from Tuesday due to pollution levels in the River Seine.

Shortly after, France's Leo Bergere came through to claim the bronze medal to the delight of the home support in Paris.

And things got better for Team GB just minutes after Yee's victory, with Lauren Henry, Hannah Scott, Lola Anderson and Georgie Brayshaw claiming a gold medal in the women's quad sculls final.

They finished ahead of the teams from the Netherlands and Germany to claim a sixth gold medal for Team GB on a hugely successful morning for the Brits.
