Shane Lowry shows his true colours after Rory McIlroy wins Masters following furious incident with reporter

Lowry walked out of interview at Augusta before McIlroy wrapped up historic career Grand Slam

Rory McIlroy's 2025 Masters victory was a dramatic and emotional moment, 11 years after his previous major.

The Northern Irishman completed a career Grand Slam by defeating Justin Rose with a birdie on the first hole of their sudden-death play-off at the Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday.

When asked if McIlroy could convert his two-shot lead into a green jacket on the final day, Shane Lowry walked off.

The 38-year-old had good reason. While his chances were relatively slim at the time, he was far from out of the picture himself.

Lowry was six-under and six shots back from the lead in sixth place, and was understandably aggrieved to be cast as the leader's friend when he was still in touch himself.

Needless to say, the interview did not go well on that occasion.

"I'm not gonna stand here and talk about Rory for 10 minutes. I'm trying to win the tournament as well," he replied.

"I know that's what you want me to talk about, but I've just had a s**t finish. I've got a chance of winning the Masters tomorrow - I'm gonna go and hit some balls.

"I think we need time. I need a half an hour now to sit there and gather my thoughts. I can't be coming to talk to you guys straight away. It shouldn't be happening.

"Tennis players have to talk to the media, but they have half an hour or an hour before they have to do it. I think we should have the same thing."

But when his friend saw off Rose in the play-off to overcome a late wobble and add the Masters to his previous wins across all three other majors, Lowry was full of smiles.

He ended the day well down the leaderboard in the Georgia sunshine but was evidently thrilled for McIlroy when the emotional new champion found him after the nail-biting play-off.

The pair shared a jubilant embrace. Lowry lifted a tearful McIlroy off the grass, shook his hand and held his head in congratulations.

An already applauding audience voiced their approval before McIlroy headed off to collect his trophy and get fitted for the iconic green jacket of Augusta members and Masters champions.
