What Justin Rose said to Rory McIlroy immediately after losing to him in dramatic Masters play-off

Rose went straight up to the new champion.

Justin Rose has revealed what he told Rory McIlroy straight after his put to finally win The Masters following a one-hole playoff.

McIlroy finally ended his Masters curse after getting over the line at Augusta National to complete a historic Grand Slam and his fifth major victory.

The Northern Irishman becomes the sixth golfer to complete the Grand Slam, joining Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, and Gary Player in the exclusive club.

After a sensational last round from Rose, McIlroy had all the pressure on his shoulders and failed to convert a par at hole 18 leading to a nail-biting play-off.

The 35-year-old somehow kept his composure and claimed victory and a huge £3.2m cash prize against Rose, whose Masters woes continued with another playoff defeat.

Despite missing out again Rose kept it extremely classy and went over to congratulate McIlroy immediately after he made the winning putt.

What Rose said to McIlroy after historic Grand Slam

Speaking in his post-round interview, the Englishman revealed exactly what he told McIlroy after his win.

"I just said, listen, this is a historic moment in golf, isn't it, someone who achieves the career Grand Slam," Rose explained.

"I said it was pretty cool to be able to share that moment with him. Obviously, I wanted to be the bad guy today, but still, it's a momentous occasion for the game of golf."

McIlroy was understandably full of emotion after finally claiming his first green jacket and admitted he wasn't sure if he'd ever get the job done with it being 11 years since his last major.

"I started to wonder if it would ever be my time," said McIlroy, who shot a one-over 73 on the final day to tie with Rose on a very impressive 11 under.

"The past 10 years [I've been] coming with the burden of the Grand Slam on my shoulders and trying to achieve that.

"I am so proud to be able to call myself a Masters champion. It's been very difficult. And not just about winning my next major, but the career Grand Slam," he added.
