Man Utd 'seriously considering' bringing back player Erik ten Hag let go as 'bombshell' drops

Erik ten Hag was sacked by Manchester United in October 2024.

Manchester United are reportedly interested in bringing back a former player in what would be a shock move.

United's dismal 24/25 season continued on Tuesday night after they were beaten by high-flying Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Former winger Anthony Elanga scored a brilliant individual goal to secure a 1-0 victory for Forest.

As a result, Ruben Amorim's men remain in 13th place in the Premier League table, and they will drop to 14th if Tottenham Hotspur manage to beat Chelsea on Thursday night.

Looking ahead to the summer transfer window, it has been sensationally claimed that United are interested in signing David de Gea, who left Old Trafford back in 2023.

At the time, then-Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag decided to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

However, Onana has often been criticised after conceding a number of questionable goals.

As reported by Spanish news outlet Fichajes, United are 'seriously considering' De Gea's return.

The report stated: "De Gea’s contract expires in June, although the club will activate a clause to extend his contract for another year. Still, public pressure and United’s desire to rectify their mistake could open the door to negotiations.

"The goalkeeper’s return to the Theatre of Dreams doesn’t seem as far-fetched as it did a few months ago. At Old Trafford, they know his departure was a mistake, and they want to recover what they should never have lost."

United legend Dwight Yorke has previously backed the idea of re-signing De Gea.

He said: "I think re-signing David de Gea would be a really smart move.

"I don’t think it will happen though as it would rub salt in the wounds of the manager who let him go. My question is what is the point of having a number two at the club?"

United are back in Premier League action this weekend when they take on rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
