Wayne Rooney is close to becoming the new manager of DC United, despite his wife’s apparent disapproval.
The former England international announced his departure from Derby County at the end of June, and it seems that he has decided to return to Washington based DC United, where he spent time as a player before leaving to play and then manage Derby.
According to The Athletic, Rooney has agreed terms to become the American club's new manager. And footage has emerged showing Rooney arriving at Dulles international airport. But Rooney’s wife, Coleen appeared not so keen on a move back to the States.
Texts dating back to 2018 were revealed during the Wagatha Christie court case between Coleen and Rebekha Vardy.

Vardy asked Coleen how things were going in Washington during Rooney’s time playing for DC United.
Coleen replied: “Hiya, hope your all week [well]. We're ok thanks its tough being on your own though.”
She added: “Washington isn’t the best....nice to visit but different to live. Not loads for the kids to do, mostly park, hardly any soft plays and things like that. It’s quite behind the UK, which I never would have though. But we will get used to it (I hope).”
“Wayne is loving it, and the kids are fine, settled into school straight away. So really happy they are fine. Thanks for the message love xx.”

She later added that she ‘never believed in homesickness’ until she left the UK, and stated that she ‘cried every night’ as a result of missing her family back in England.
DC United are currently second bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference after a record 7-0 thrashing by Philadelphia Union on Saturday. They have gathered 17 points from 17 games so far and their season has been far from ideal.
It is hoped that the return of Rooney will be able to galvanise the team and bring them back closer to the play off places, DC United haven’t featured in the play offs since Rooney first left in 2019.

Rooney’s first game back in charge could be Sunday’s match against Minnesota, they are also due to host a friendly match against German champions Bayern Munich on 21 July.
Will Rooney be a success as a manager in the MLS? Only time will tell.
