Coleen Rooney makes big decision as husband Wayne Rooney begins Plymouth job in Championship opener

Coleen Rooney makes big decision as husband Wayne Rooney begins Plymouth job in Championship opener

Wayne Rooney takes charge of his first competitive Plymouth game today.

Coleen Rooney has made a big decision as her husband Wayne Rooney begins his gig at Plymouth Argyle ahead of their Championship opener.

Rooney, who was appointed Plymouth head coach in May, will begin his role later today at Sheffield Wednesday.

It will be his first managerial role since he was sacked by Birmingham City at the start of the year after a disappointing spell of less than three months.

And ahead of getting underway at Plymouth, the Manchester United and England legend won't be joined by his wife Coleen or his sons in the South West.

According to the Daily Mail, Coleen will not be following her husband to Plymouth and will instead remain in Cheshire with their four sons.

Rooney, who has also managed Derby County and DC United, revealed the 'hunger' to get back into management was 'huge' as he jumped at the Plymouth opportunity.

"I had a short break, maybe a week or so, before I went to manage DC United, and then I had 48 hours before I went in to Birmingham City. Before coming here, I had a few months. It was good. I was able to reflect on everything I have been through as a coach," he explained.

"I looked at things I have done well, things that I didn't do so well. I had the chance to get some personal feedback and I spoke to many different people within the game. It was really helpful having that time but the hunger to get back in was huge."

The 38-year-old added: "I'm not someone who can sit at home. I've got four young children but I've got that desire I want to be great. I had a really good playing career. I know many ex-players who have been at the top but are unwilling to put themselves out there. I'm not like that.

"I want to be an example for my children, for my players. I want to be in football. That's what I know, that's what I love. Hopefully I can bring many smiles to a lot of fans' faces here."

Plymouth survived the drop from the Championship last season as Rooney is tasked with improving The Pilgrims this campaign, having replaced Ian Foster.
