West Ham issue statement after Michail Antonio involved in road traffic accident

West Ham issued a statement after rumours claimed Michail Antonio was involved in a car crash in Essex.

West Ham star Michail Antonio has been involved in a car crash on Saturday, it has been confirmed.

A photo circulated showing a Ferrari completely smashed and ruined in woodland and though there was no confirmation the car belonged to him, West Ham fan accounts speculated that Antonio was the driver of the vehicle.

Shortly after, West Ham issued a full statement confirming Antonio had been involved in an accident and has their "thoughts and prayers". They also said they would inform fans of any updates on his situation.

The statement read: "West Ham United can confirm striker Michail Antonio has today been involved in a road traffic accident. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the Club are with Michail, his family and friends at this time. The Club will issue an update in due course."

On social media, West Ham supporters poured in with well wishes for one of their most popular players, hoping he pulls through.

The Jamaica international joined West Ham from Nottingham Forest for a fee of £7 million in 2015 and showed his versatility by playing in multiple positions over the years.

He went on to transition into a striker and has scored 83 goals in all competitions for the club. He holds the record for the most goals for West Ham in the Premier League, with his tally of 68 eclipsing legends Paolo Di Canio and Mark Noble on 47.

Antonio has featured 14 times for the East London outfit this season, scoring once. His most recent appearance came in a 3-1 loss to Leicester City in Ruud van Nistelrooy's first game in charge on Tuesday.

The out-of-form Irons are next in action on Monday when they host Wolverhampton Wanderers at the London Stadium.

SPORTbible has reached out to Antonio's representatives for comment.
