Newcastle fans in hysterics after seeing who got to lift the Carabao Cup before most of their players

Magpies players got to lift the club's first trophy in 55 years at Wembley.

Newcastle fans were left in hysterics after seeing who got to lift the Carabao Cup trophy before a number of their players at Wembley.

The Magpies beat Liverpool 2-1 through goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak. Federico Chiesa scored a consolation in second half injury time for the Reds.

It is the first time Newcastle have won a trophy since the 1969 Fairs Cup, and the first trophy - excluding league titles - of manager Eddie Howe's career.

They have now secured automatic Europa League qualification for next season, although can still qualify for the Champions League dependent on their finishing position in the English top flight.

The Carabao Cup trophy was lifted by team captain Bruno Guimaraes, who led his team up the Wembley steps to receive their winners' medals.

But fans noticed that somebody else had already picked up the trophy before most of the players.

After Guimaraes, club captain Jamaal Lascelles and Kieran Trippier lifted the trophy, it was passed down to the likes of Isak, Joelinton and Dan Burn to hold aloft.

Then, it was passed down to Newcastle assistant manager Jason Tindall, who was stood next to Eddie Howe and other members of the club's coaching staff.

Tindall then gave the trophy to other members of Newcastle's squad on his side of the Wembley stand, before it went back to the opposite side.

Reacting to the scenes on Twitter, one fan wrote: "Great to see Jason Tindall lifting the trophy before some of the players."

A second said: "Jason Tindall the fourth person affiliated to Newcastle lifting the trophy."

But others were surprised he wasn't earlier in the queue, with a third writing: "Fully expect Jason Tindall to be the one that lifts the trophy first."

And a fourth stated: "If there's any justice in this world, Jason Tindall will be the one to lift the trophy."

Tindall is the subject of an ongoing joke among football fans due to how often he stands on the touchline alongside Howe during matches.

One clip even emerged of the assistant boss trying to shake the hand of Wolves boss Gary O'Neil before Howe in the 2022/23 season.

A Twitter account titled 'Jason Tindall desperate to be centre of attention' went viral and racked up over 50,000 followers.

Howe was asked about his assistant becoming an 'Internet sensation' in 2023, to which he replied: "We're both very active on the sidelines, so I've encouraged Jason to be that way.

"We were very much a partnership when we first started in management, and we try to do everything we can to help the players.

"I think we're situated together on the front there, and at the end of the game he naturally makes his way over because he's usually to my left [nearest the opposing manager]. He's a great guy and he's been brilliant for me this year."

Tindall was long-time team-mates with Howe at Bournemouth, and was already on the coaching staff at the Cherries when the latter became the Football League's youngest-ever manager in 2009.

He followed Howe to Burnley and then for a second spell at Bournemouth, before replacing Howe as Cherries boss when he resigned from his role following Premier League relegation in 2020.
