Mats Hummels is training in a rival European nation’s shirt after being snubbed from Germany’s Euro 2024 squad.

Hummels, who played a key role in Borussia Dortmund reaching the Champions League final last term, is currently a free agent after his contract at the Bundesliga club expired.

The 35-year-old, who was also not selected in Germany's 26-man squad for the Euros, has shared a photo of himself training in the gym wearing a Euro 2012 Greece shirt as he ponders his next move.

On Instagram, he wrote: "It's difficult to find a jersey for sports that doesn't cause any stupid rumours afterwards,"

Earlier this month Hummels took aim at Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann for not including him in their Euro 2024 squad.

The centre-back has played just twice for Germany since Euro 2020, with Nagelsmann explaining that, upon deciding on Antonio Rudiger and Jonathan Tah as his first-choice centre-back pairing, Hummels' age had counted against him.

"We have decided that Rudiger and Tah will be our starting centre-backs," he told reporters. "Then it's about who are the most suitable players behind them? What do the substitutes have to bring?

"What's the age structure in the tournament and what happens afterwards?"

In response to Nagelsmann's comments, Hummels told Bild: "If I understood him correctly it was more about age-related issues like fitness.

"If I'd had a period like the one I had recently before [the international break in] March, maybe I would have been called up - [and] for the European Championship squad as well. I can understand the idea that a group has been growing since March.

"It's bitter for me as an individual because I'm currently one of the five best defenders in Germany. I have the self-confidence to say that."
