Two contestants was left stunned by a football-related answer during an episode of Pointless on April 1.
The episode was aired on BBC on Tuesday (April 1) evening. If you are unfamiliar with the show the aim of the game is to score as few points as possible by giving obscure answers to an array of questions ranging from music and sports to general knowledge.
If a contestant’s answer is not chosen by any of the 100 anonymous participants, they will score zero points.

The team with the fewest points at the end of the show wins the jackpot.
So, what was the football question which caused a stir?
It was about men’s football treble winners with Manchester United’s 1999 Champions League final squad and Manchester City’s 2023 Champions League final squad both appearing on the screen.

Contestants discussed potential answers and quickly suggested David May while another put forward Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with players such as Ryan Giggs also mentioned.
Attention then switched to the Man City part of the question with a contestant saying “Maybe on the bench is Rico Lewis and possibly Cole Palmer”.
The pair then confirmed their three answers.
“From the Man Utd 1999 squad, David May, and then the Man City 2023 squad hopefully Cole Palmer and Rico Lewis.”

If one of the answers had proved to be ‘pointless’ the contestants would’ve won £6,750.

To the surprise of the duo, Palmer was a ‘pointless’ answer and as a result they won the cash prize.
A £500 bonus was also on the line which could’ve been secured if the other two answers proved to be ‘pointless’. And luckily Lewis was a pointless answer.

Next, everything was riding on May being a pointless answer with the contestants admitting that they felt this was their best shot at a pointless answer.
Unfortunately, the pair could not win the £500 bonus as two of the 100 participants named May – although the couple still walked away with a jackpot of £6,750.
The five pointless answers for the Man Utd part of the question were Jesper Blomqvist, Jonathan Greening, Ronny Johnsen, Wes Brown and Raimundus van der Gouw.
While the seven pointless answers for the Man City part of the question were Palmer, Lewis, Stefan Ortega, Julian Alvarez, Scott Carson, Sergio Gomez and Maximo Peronne.
