Shock new name 'in the frame' to be next Man Utd manager as Erik ten Hag given deadline to save job

Shock new name 'in the frame' to be next Man Utd manager as Erik ten Hag given deadline to save job

Erik ten Hag's future is under doubt following Manchester United's shaky start to the new season.

A shock name has been added to Manchester United's managerial short-list amid pressure mounting on Erik ten Hag.

That's according to Turkish outlet Ajansspor, who claim a surprise candidate is in the frame to replace Ten Hag should Man United relieve him of his duties.

Ten Hag's future has been clouded by uncertainty following Man United's shaky start to the new season.

The Red Devils have already suffered three league defeats this season, including not one but two 3-0 home defeats (Liverpool and Tottenham).

Gareth Southgate, Zinedine Zidane and Thomas Frank to name but a few are among the managers thought to be on Man United's radar.

Ajansspor now state Vincenzo Montella is in the frame following the job he has done at Turkey.

Montella has been in charge of the Turkish national team since 2023 and guided them to the quarter-finals of this summer's Euro 2024.

The Italian boasts a 52.94 per cent win record as the report claims Man United have added him to their list of managerial options.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has a decision to make over Ten Hag and speaking ahead of Man United's goalless draw at Aston Villa, the INEOS chief touched on the manager's future.

"I don't want to answer that question… I like Erik," said Ratcliffe when asked whether he still had faith in Ten Hag

"I think he's a very good coach but at the end of the day it's not my call, it's the management team that's running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.

"But that team that’s running Manchester United has only been together since June or July. They weren't there in January, February, March or April – [CEO] Omar [Berrada], [Sporting Director] Dan Ashworth - they only arrived in July.

"They've only been there... you can count it in weeks almost - they've not been there a long time so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions.

"Our objective is very clear - we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it's not there yet, obviously - that's very clear."
