Bookmakers name new favourite to win the Premier League after Man City's slip-up at Newcastle

Bookmakers name new favourite to win the Premier League after Man City's slip-up at Newcastle

There could be a new champion this season.

The odds for the Premier League winners have drastically changed as the bookmakers have named a new favourite in the wake of Manchester City's draw with Newcastle United.

For the second time this season, Premier League champions City dropped points as they drew 1-1 with Newcastle United at St James' Park on Saturday.

The result allowed Arne Slot's Liverpool to move one point clear atop of the league table following their 2-1 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Arsenal to get level on points but they trail on goal difference.

And in the fallout of the match, bookmakers have named a new favourite to lift the Premier League trophy at the end of the season.

Following the draw with Newcastle, the odds for City to win a their fifth successive Premier League title have improved to 7/4 on SkyBet, with new favourites Arsenal given odds of 6/4 to finally beat their recent rivals.

The bookmakers have current league leaders Liverpool as the third favourite team to win the league, with odds of 7/2 followed by a dramatic increase in odds for fourth most-likely Chelsea to claim the title, with odds of 12/1.

Arsenal also looked almost certain to drop points over the weekend, as newly-promoted Leicester City came back from being 2-0 down to bring the score to a 2-2 tie shortly after the hour mark.

However, a pair of extra-time goals scored by Leicester's own Wilfred Ndidi and Arsenal forward Kai Havertz secured the three points for the Gunners at the Emirates.

"It was worrying. In theory, we should have never got to this point - but this is football. This is the beauty of football, in relation to other sports," confessed Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta after the match.

"It got very emotional. More than we wanted certainly. After 2-0 the result should have been bigger. This is the Premier League. They scored two goals. But I’m really pleased with the way we responded."

However, Arsenal will continue to be without several key players as they hope to finally beat Man City to the title, with players like Martin Odegaard, Ben White and new signing Mikel Merino all sidelined.
