Liverpool told star player is 'already gone' and Arne Slot has 'no chance' of preventing blockbuster transfer

Liverpool told star player is 'already gone' and Arne Slot has 'no chance' of preventing blockbuster transfer

Slot could face a major battle to keep one of his key players.

Liverpool have been told that one of their star players is 'already' leaving the club amid their 1-0 Champions League win over RB Leipzig.

The Reds secured a narrow win in Leipzig through Darwin Nunez's first half goal.

Nunez was perhaps unfortunate to be denied a penalty after being tripped by Willi Orban, while Caoimhin Kelleher made a series of saves at the other end.

Arne Slot has now won 11 of his 12 games in charge of the Reds, with Liverpool second in the Champions League group stage table on a maximum nine points.

While not perhaps an immediate issue, Slot may have headaches to deal with in the coming months due to the contract statuses of key players Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk.

All three players are out of contract next summer, and are yet to commit to fresh terms.

And speaking on Sky Sports' Soccer Special ahead of Wednesday's fixtures, former Tottenham and Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood believes Alexander-Arnold's future has already been decided.

He said: "We're talking about three top-drawer players there who want to win trophies. They don't want to sit there just to challenge for Champions League positions.

"They all want to win stuff, so this start helps [to convince them to stay]. It can only help.

"I think with Trent, I think he's gone. Once Real Madrid come knocking for you.

"He's won everything at the football club and been a magnificent servant, but there's no chance they're keeping him now I wouldn't have thought.

"With Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, I think it's completely different because I'm not sure where they are going to go which is better than Liverpool."

Liverpool are next in action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Arsenal in the Premier League.
