Jamie Carragher 'hunted down' new Liverpool signing in training after finding out he was being mocked

Jamie Carragher revealed how he went after the player after learning of the teammate's actions.

Jamie Carragher once "hunted down" a Liverpool teammate after finding out he had mocked him.

Carragher spent his entire career with Liverpool, racking up 737 appearances for the Reds and winning the Champions League, two FA Cups, three League Cups and one UEFA Cup.

Although he grew up supporting Everton, Carragher became a Liverpool legend and his link with the club is still strong nearly 20 years after he made his debut.

Carragher was renowned for being a no-nonsense, tough-tackling defender and there is one particular story where he left one on one of his own teammates after being furious with his sneer about him being called up for England.

The 46-year-old played 38 times for his country, having made his debut against Hungary in April 1999.

But beforehand, teammate Rigobert Song had a little giggle over Carragher getting his first call-up and he took it personally, proceeding to leave the Cameroon international "limping with grimace" and hobbling after hitting him with a brutal tackle.

The Sky Sports pundit shared the story in his 2008 autobiography, saying that he "did" Song, uncle of former Arsenal midfielder Alex at the first opportunity he got.

Though challenges of a strong nature were banned in Liverpool training under Gerard Houllier, Carragher said that he has never "hunted down a 50-50 tackle with greater appetite"

Recalling the incident in a column about Harry Maguire for The Telegraph, Carragher wrote: "Ask the ex-Liverpool defender and current Cameroon coach Rigobert Song. On the day I was called up to the England squad for the first time he openly laughed at me with some teammates."

"Twenty minutes later we were training and I approached the session like it was the Merseyside derby, the usual rules of no strong tackling abandoned as I relished every opportunity to demonstrate my competitiveness, especially when Song was nearby.

“A line had to be drawn. No-one was going to take the p*** out of me like that."

Explaining why he reacted in such a manner, Carragher added: "Judge my attitude all you wish, but there are moments in your career when you have to look after yourself, protect your reputation and fight back, because the sport is brutal and once anyone smells blood - fans, teammates or coaches - they will finish you.”

In his book, Carragher claims he told Song, "You're not f***ing laughing now, are you?" after the tackle.

Song played 38 times for Liverpool before turning out for West Ham, Lens, Galatasaray and Trabzonspor.

The only player to be sent off in two World Cups, Song managed Cameroon's national team for two years before taking the same role with the Central African Republic this month following his dismissal in February 2024.
