England achieved something they've only ever managed once in their history in win over Slovakia

England made history with their Euro 2024 win against Slovakia.

England achieved something they've only ever managed once before by beating Slovakia at Euro 2024.

England booked their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 with a thrilling come-from-behind victory against Slovakia in their last-16 clash.

Slovakia opened the scoring through Ivan Schranz and seemed destined to advance to the next round of the tournament.

But Jude Bellingham popped up in the 95th minute as he produced a moment of magic to level proceedings.

In the first minute of extra-time, Harry Kane headed home to put England ahead.

On the whole England have underwhelmed in Germany, but Gareth Southgate's side have a great chance to go all the way in the tournament.

Southgate's popularity among England fans has certainly wained in recent months, but on Sunday he oversaw something that the Three Lions have only done once before.

Remarkably, Sunday's win was only the second time in history that England have won a European Championship knockout match not played at Wembley Stadium.

The first of those came three years ago during Euro 2020, when England beat Ukraine 4-0 in a quarter-final tie played in Rome, Italy.

All of England's other knockout triumphs have come at Wembley Stadium. The first came during Euro 96 - hosted by England - when Terry Venables' side defeated Spain at Wembley via a quarter-final penalty shootout.

England's round-of-16 and semi-final wins at Euro 2020 also came at Wembley.

At Euro 80, 88, 92 and 2000, England did not progress beyond the group stage.

At the 2004 and 2012 editions of the tournament, England were eliminated at the quarter-final stage, which at the time was the first knockout round.

A round-of-16 was introduced for Euro 2016 in France, but England suffered a shock defeat to Iceland at the first knockout hurdle.

The Three Lions did not qualify for Euro 72, 76, 84 or 2008. They did not enter the first European Championship - then known as the European Nations' Cup - in 1960.

Though England did win the third-place play-off at Euro 68, only four teams entered the tournament and England lost their only match at the semi-final stage.

After beating Slovakia, England will take on Switzerland in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 in Dusseldorf on Saturday July 6 at 5pm BST.
