Aston Villa denied historic win against Juventus in the Champions League after 'shocking' last-minute VAR decision

Aston Villa denied historic win against Juventus in the Champions League after 'shocking' last-minute VAR decision

Morgan Rogers thought he had won it for Unai Emery's side.

Fans have reacted after Morgan Rogers' last-minute goal for Aston Villa was ruled out after Diego Carlos was adjudged to have fouled Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

In the dying embers of Wednesday night's Champions League clash at Villa Park, the home side thought they'd secured all three points when Morgan Rogers tapped home from close range.

After a free-kick from Youri Tielemans was floated into the box, Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio tried and failed to catch the ball, with it soon falling into the path of Rogers.

But referee Jesus Gil deemed that Di Gregorio was impeded by defender Diego Carlos in the build-up – a decision that has sparked a huge amount of reaction online.

One fan wrote: "Absolutely shocking decision. Don’t understand how a foul can be given, just an attacker and a keeper going for the same ball in the air. Keeper goes down way to easily."

A second said: "It’s a foul all over Europe except in England where that is allowed," while a third commented: "Absolute joke. Supposed to be an elite level competition and the officiating is a shambles yet again."

A fourth wrote: "Carlos knows what he’s doing there. He didn’t compete for the ball, he was absolutely nowhere near it. That is a definitely a foul."

A fifth added: "Shocking decision... I’m an Arsenal fan but that is a clear goal. I’d be furious if that was given against us."

In his post-match interview with TNT Sports, Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins gave his take on the disallowed goal.

"I think it's soft," he said. "Maybe in the Premier League that's a goal. But I feel like in Europe, in this competition, goalkeepers are protected a lot. I thought we had scored, but I think it had a 0-0 game written all over it. We'd have been lucky to take it."

Watkins added: "I have to be careful about what I say about the referees but the refereeing is a little bit different during this competition. They don't let things go as much. We are used to that now. It's one of those things."

Thoughts on the decision? Should it have been ruled out? Let us know in the comments.
