Unlike some clubs that are known to send youngsters on loan without necessarily having a plan in place for their development, Manchester City’s successful track record suggests that they do not fit the aforementioned description.
For instance, City's decision to send rising goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu to Rochdale and Portsmouth respectively in the last two seasons have been astute calls, as the Irishman’s name has started to be uttered in conversations discussing some of the best young stoppers in the world.
While a number of other recent examples can also be cited such as Issa Kabore’s fruitful spell at ESTAC Troyes and Callum Doyle making waves at Sunderland last season, there are perhaps none better than Yan Couto - who was astounding at SC Braga during the 2021/22 season.

Making 42 appearances in all competitions for the Portuguese giants throughout the course of the previous campaign, the skilful 20-year old became a mainstay in the side that also managed to reach the UEFA Europa League quarter-finals.
The Brazilian’s flair going forward for Braga has drawn comparisons to none other than Manchester City’s very own versatile full-back Joao Cancelo, who is classed by many as the standout full-back in world football.
In addition, the highly-rated defender’s performances have impressed to the extent that he has been nominated for the 2022 edition of the Golden Boy award - an honour reserved for young players that belong in and amongst the upper echelon.

While some may expect the former Coritiba star to have the desire to fight for a place at the Etihad Stadium next term, a revelation has emerged about his immediate plans that may surprise many.
As per a report by Portuguese newspaper O Jogo, as translated and relayed by Inside Futbol, Yan Couto ‘wants’ to stay at SC Braga on loan next season as he aims to continue his progress in Portugal. It has also been claimed that the club wish to sign the exciting right-back on loan once again, as he remains a ‘priority’ target ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.
The report suggests that the former Brazil U17 international is ‘awaiting’ the Premier League champions’ decision on his short-term future for the time being. However, it is mentioned that Pep Guardiola’s side’s current preference is to find a loan destination for Couto within England.

Interestingly, Braga were reportedly ‘eager’ to include a buy-back option in the initial loan deal and may try their luck once again if Manchester City approve the starlet signing for the Primeira Liga outfit next season.
While City do not need any reminding of how high Yan Couto’s ceiling is, it would not come as a surprise to see them send him on loan to a club within the country to ensure the gifted defender gets to grips with the English game.
