Chelsea wanted to make a quick appointment of Graham Potter as Thomas Tuchel’s replacement amid the former’s links with the England job, according to reports.
On Wednesday morning the Blues announced they had parted ways with Tuchel, the morning after they lost 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League.
Soon after, Potter emerged as a leading candidate for the then vacant role at Stamford Bridge alongside former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino.

After discussions on Wednesday, the former Brighton boss was soon named as the new man in charge at Chelsea.

Tuchel was in the job for just over 19 months and has now left having won the Champions League, Super Cup and the Club World Cup.
Potter’s appointment follows a summer of change at the west London side as the club enters a new period of its history.
It has now been revealed that the Blues wanted to hire Potter as soon as possible amid the departure of Tuchel.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea did not think that the 47-year-old would be available to hire for much longer.

Potter has been speculated to be one of the next people in line for the England job should Gareth Southgate leave after the World Cup later this year.
The club felt as though he would be the ‘shoo-in candidate’ should the national team have a managerial change.

Chelsea were soon able to get their new man, and he will now be preparing to take charge of his first game for his new side.
His debut in the dugout for the Blues was set to take place on Saturday afternoon in a west London derby against Fulham, but the match was postponed.
This was a result of the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Potter’s first game will now be against FC Salzburg in the Champions League, which will also be his debut in the competition.
