Vince McMahon ignored his father’s warning upon buying WWE.
Netflix’s eagerly anticipated ‘Mr McMahon’ documentary covers the rise and fall of former WWE chief Vince McMahon.
The series, which features interviews from the likes of John Cena, The Rock and Triple H, recounts how McMahon grew the WWE into a global superpower and explores how his career declined when he was tangled in major controversy.

The first episode of the docuseries covers McMahon’s childhood love of wrestling and relationship with his father, Vincent J. McMahon, who was also a promoter.
McMahon explains that his father was looking to sell his business, but had at that time not considered his son as a potential buyer. Instead, WWE Hall of Famer, commentator and promoter Robert James (Gorilla Monsoon) was seen as the likely inheritor of the company.
McMahon explained: "When I joined the company, Gorilla Monsoon was the heir apparent, and I could feel the tension right away. Gorilla Monsoon thinks I (Vince) am competition, and boy he was right."

Ultimately McMahon proposed to buy his dad’s business, offering an upfront fee, money in three-month instalments and then a final payment.
Should McMahon fail to pay any of the instalments, his father would get the company back and claim the money he had already been paid.
Against all expectations McMahon made the deal and grew the WWE to become unfathomably popular.

Upon taking over the company, McMahon admitted he snubbed his father’s advice to keep the WWE as a regional sports entertainment company.
Instead McMahon expanded the company across the US.
“As soon as I closed the deal I knew what I wanted to do - go right into their territories.” he explained. “My dad was very much against that.
“He said 'Take it easy, Vinnie, don't rock the boat' It hurt my dad but, at the same time, I'm in business.
