The Frenkie de Jong to Manchester United saga looks to have taken yet another turn as the relationship between the Dutchman’s agents and Barcelona is reportedly deteriorating.
As of Thursday night, concrete news about the situation has been scarce with all camps involved tight-lipped about the ongoing negotiations. However, some news did circulate heading into the evening.
There is consensus belief from credible Spanish sources that despite Chelsea entering the conversation and testing the waters in regards to De Jong’s situation, United remain the favourites in the race with the midfielder preferring a move to Old Trafford to reunite with former boss Erik ten Hag.
The above was reported by Marca’s Luis Rojo. Fellow Spanish journalist Manu Sainz added that De Jong’s agent was in London, as of yesterday, to meet with United’s representatives.

De Jong’s team have received a clear indication of Chelsea’s interest but the Ten Hag factor is considered too strong.
This was echoed by Simon Jones of The Mail.
In summary, the information already known to most has been even further reaffirmed.
United look in pole position to land the signature of the Barca star and everything seems to be in place other than the internal issues over in the capital of Catalonia.

Barcelona reportedly owe De Jong in excess of £17 million, with the player hesitant to depart the club before being paid his dues.
This could prove to be an important piece in this game of chess in United’s advantage.
Before night’s end, another important report hit the air as Achraf Ben Ayad reported that the relationship between De Jong’s agents and Barcelona is “practically broken.”
This is key as up until recently, De Jong was keen on staying at Barca and you would figure that his team was directed to do everything in their power to make that happen.

However, after heavy financial compromises which saw the Dutchman essentially play one of his three seasons with the Blaugrana for free, De Jong and co. may have finally drawn the line.
The hold up in the conclusion of this deal – which is shaping up to be one of the biggest this summer – has seen many fans grow impatient. The good news for the Reds faithful is that United don’t look any less likely to secure De Jong’s services.
The bad news is that the completion of the transfer may yet take some time because of the internal complexities.

All in all, it seems as though United have agreed an initial fee of €65 million with the Spanish giants with the rest – in the region of €20 million – set to come in instalments.
De Jong himself seems to have warmed up to the idea of linking up with his old boss once again, meaning that the quicker the mess at Barca is sorted, the sooner we could see De Jong donning the Manchester red.
