Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards played out the first ever 0-0 in Super League history before the tie was decided in Golden Point – and footage of the remarkable scenes have emerged.
The 2025 Super League season kicked off with a bang [sort of] on Thursday night as Matthew Peet's Wigan opened the defence of their title against local rivals Leigh.
On paper, it looked like a high-scoring affair as Michael Buffer appeared as a special guest but to the surprise of many, the biggest opening-night crowd in Super League history witnessed a lack of tries.

In fact, both teams failed to register a single point in normal time – the lowest scoring match in the SL era – and the game went to an unprecedented Golden Point.
For those who aren't aware, the Golden Point extra-time rule means that if a game is drawn at full-time, then it will be decided in two additional five-minute periods.
If there is no score after 10 minutes, then the game will be deemed a draw and both teams will take one point.

But three minutes into additional time, Gareth O'Brien delivered with a dramatic drop goal to secure a historic victory for Leigh, who recorded their first win at Wigan since 1983.
Here's how fans on social media reacted to the remarkable scenes.
One said: "Bedlam. An unbelievable victory for Leigh over all-conquering Wigan. 1-0, an all-time Super League classic for so many reasons. Leigh’s first win at Wigan since 1983. Tremendous match."
A second wrote: "Weirdest game I’ve ever been to. Will have little bearing on who wins the big ones this year. Wigan were awesome in defence but terrible with the ball in crucial moments. Why go for 1 from half way but not in their 20m. Fair play to Leigh."
A third commented: "Wigan v Leigh. One word. Boring," and a fourth said: "The downside of golden point. Leigh could nil Wigan on their own ground for 80 minutes and still come away with nothing."

A fifth added: "Shocking game. Standards through the floor. Leigh the better side, Wigan's usual brand of anti-rugby somehow keeping them in the game."
