Footage has since emerged of the moment it happened and it's tough to watch – so if you're squeamish, look away now.
Bjornsson - AKA 'Thor' - only recently returned to powerlifting following a two-year absence to pursue a career in boxing, where he most notably defeated rival Eddie Hall.
He has expressed his interest in returning to competition in a bid to break a number of lifting records.

But it seems he'll be sidelined for a while now after sustaining a horrendous injury.
While attempting to bench press a personal best of 556 pounds at his Thor Power Gym, the Icelandic man mountain tore his left pec completely off the bone.
Upon doing so, he immediately let out a cry as his spotters quickly lifted the barbell off his chest.

Even in the video, you can see his pec literally tearing as the weight is lowered – you can even hear it snap too.
The camera then panned out to spectators who looked in utter shock, some even covering their mouths as Thor simply lay on the bench and processed what had just unfolded.
When popular page 'Lifting Vault' posted the clip to YouTube, the comments section was inundated with fans sending their love.
One person said: "Saw this live, absolutely devastating. Wishing him a fast recovery."

While another added: "Unfortunately this stuff can happen when you put on so much muscle and increase the weights so quickly."
As a third commented: "Hoping for a speedy recovery for Thor. This was always a possibility from hopping back on cycle and growing muscle this quickly, he hasn’t had enough time for his tendons to match that growth."
Thor, most famous for his role as 'The Mountain' in Game of Thrones, is yet to break his silence on the devastating injury.
Let's hope we get to see the 6-foot-9-inch megastar back in action as soon as possible – wishing him a speedy recovery.
