Patrice Evra set to make MMA debut as shock fight announced for ex-Man Utd star

Patrice Evra will compete under the PFL banner.

Patrice Evra is set to make his MMA debut as a shock fight has been announced for the ex-footballer.

Evra enjoyed a glittering career as a footballer, playing for the likes of Juventus and Manchester United during his distinguished career.

He made an impressive 379 appearances in a Man United shirt, winning five Premier League titles and the prestigious Champions League.

The Frenchman is widely regarded as one of the best left-backs of his generation, having also won two Serie A titles with Juve.

Since Evra called time on his legendary career in 2019, he has worked as pundit, providing expert analysis.

But it appears he is missing the competitive edge as he is set to return to action.

However, the 43-year-old won't be returning to a football pitch - instead he'll step foot inside the cage for an MMA bout, specifically PFL's SmartCage.

Evra, who started his combat training in 2016, has signed a deal with PFL that will see him make his MMA debut at PFL Europe Paris on Friday, May 23 at the Accor Arena.

Training camp for the Frenchman's 'showcase' bout is underway, with his opponent set to be announced.

On pursuing a career in MMA, Evra said: "You guys should know by now, I love this game too! I’ve performed on the world’s biggest stages, won every major trophy in football, but PFL Europe Paris will be an incredibly special night for me.

"I’ve been training alongside the best in the world for years, and they’ll also tell you I’m ready for this. I’m going to put on a show at the Accor Arena on 23 May, so come watch the spectacle."

PFL CEO Pete Murray added: "I’m told he loves this game as much as us, and we’ll find out on 23 May! We’re incredibly excited to have the superstar that is Patrice Evra fight under the PFL banner, as we’re all about exciting match-ups and making history.

"I can’t tell you how excited Patrice has been putting this together, but I think you’re going to see it at the Accor Arena. Paris, we’re coming to put on another historic evening of MMA, don’t miss out."

Evra's fight will be one of the featured bouts on PFL Europe Paris, which is headlined by a lightweight clash between Mansour Barnaoui and Archie Colgan.
