Brazilian referee Sampaio is affiliated with CONMEBOL and has been a FIFA-listed official for nine years.

So far, Sampaio has refereed two World Cup group games in Qatar. He was the referee for a Group A clash between Senegal and the Netherlands which saw Van Gaal’s side run out as 2-0 winners.
Sampaio then took charge of the Group C game between Poland and Saudi Arabia.
That night Poland won 2-0 thanks to goals from Piotr Zielinski and Robert Lewandowski, who netted for the first time in a World Cup.
