Now, it has been reported that Alonso could land United a transfer windfall before potentially leaving the club.
This is due to the fact that Leverkusen have been linked with a move for Luton Town’s Teden Mengi, who has impressed in the Premier League this season.
According to Football Action, the German club could make a move for Mengi in the summer, having already been scouted by Leverkusen’s Matthew Green.
United will reportedly benefit if Luton decide to sell Mengi due to the sell-on clause they included in the deal to take the defender to Kenilworth Road.

Speaking about his future last month, Alonso said: “To be honest I am not in this moment thinking about the next step. I am thinking about where I am right now and I think I am in a great place which I enjoy.
“I'm going to be happy if we play well and deserve to win. What's going to happen in the future... I don't know and I don't really care at the moment. Speculation is normal, my focus is here on Bayer Leverkusen.”
Apart from Alonso, the likes of Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Frank, Ruben Amorim, Julian Nagelsmaan and Ange Postecoglou have all been linked with replacing Klopp at Liverpool.
