Man United set to make shock move for one of their biggest rival's top players in transfer that would stun both sets of fans

Ruben Amorim is looking to ignite Manchester United's season.

Manchester United are reportedly targeting a shock move for one of their biggest rival's players.

After a dismal start to the season under Erik ten Hag, the Old Trafford club decided to part ways with the former Ajax boss in October after a 2-1 defeat by West Ham United.

39-year-old Ruben Amorim was chosen to be the successor after his impressive record at Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Amorim has had a mixed start to life at Old Trafford but recorded a huge 2-1 win over rivals Manchester City last weekend.

Looking ahead to the January transfer window, it has been claimed that United are still interested in Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier.

Big pressure has been placed on United goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir after their recent errors against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur respectively.

As reported by The Sun, United goalkeeper scout Tony Coton is still a fan of Meslier and could persuade the club to make a move.

The report stated: "Keeper scout Tony Coton still likes Leeds keeper Illan Meslier, who was a target two years ago but lost form when they were relegated.

"Coton has been a regular at his games and the 24-year-old French ace is seen as one for the future."

Aside from Meslier, it has been said that United are also keeping tabs on Botafogo stopper John.

However, it has been suggested that United want to wait until the summer before deciding on whether to sign a new goalkeeper.

Speaking after Onana's mistake against Forest, Amorim said: "You have to take it like it is. He had already, in the past, a past situation like that. We have to work on this.

"If you see the play, we are trying to build up a lot with the goalkeeper making the bounce (pass) with Matta (De Ligt). This time we have a disconnect a little bit during the play. And when we try this, we suffered a goal."

He added: "A difficult goal for us in the end of the second half. But we managed (to come back, unlike against Nottingham. We managed to help Onana, like he did in the past for us."
