Expert reveals what officials were really looking at in the VAR hub after ‘FPL’ image goes viral

Expert reveals what officials were really looking at in the VAR hub after ‘FPL’ image goes viral

An image circulated during Arsenal's 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

An expert has revealed the true contents of a photo of the VAR Hub that went viral during Arsenal's 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah scored a late equaliser for the Reds at the Emirates Stadium to secure a point for Liverpool away from home.

During the first half of the match, an image of the VAR Hub at Stockley Park showing an image of a mobile phone went viral.

The phone screen appeared to show Premier League branding - with fans speculating over what was being shown.

One fan went as far as suggesting that the screen was showing an image of Fantasy Premier League.

It is safe to say that was not the case, with personal devices banned in the VAR room - and that has now been confirmed by ESPN expert Dale Johnson.

The app on the phone was instead the Premier League Match Manager, which is used to record match details and for communications during matchdays. The Premier League uses similar design across all of its apps.

He tweeted: "This is the Premier League Match Manager app, not Fantasy Premier League.

"There are, of course, no personal devices in the VAR Hub."

There was VAR controversy during the match when a penalty was not awarded to Arsenal following contact between Kai Havertz and Ibrahima Konate.

The incident was checked but it was quickly determined that the incident did not warrant the awarding of a spot kick, with Konate winning the ball.

The Premier League's Match Centre Twitter account stated: "The referee's call of no penalty for the challenge by Konate on Martinelli was checked and confirmed by VAR - deeming that Konate won the ball."

The 2-2 draw for Liverpool means they are one point behind Manchester City, who defeated Southampton 1-0 on Saturday, in the top two placings in the table.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are a further four points back in third after nine games played.
