The Premier League have released a statement after Jhon Duran was handed a straight red card during Thursday's clash between Aston Villa and Newcastle – and the incident has sparked huge debate online.
In the 32nd minute at St James' Park, Duran appeared to lose his footing while in a foot race with Fabian Schar.
After barging into his opponent, the in-form Colombian forward stamped on Schar's back with his stoods high before pushing his foot up towards the defender's head.

Many argued that the contact was accidental but moments later, referee Anthony Taylor brandished a red card, which clearly came as a surprise to Duran, who looked on in bewilderment.

The Premier League would later issue a statement on the controversial incident. They wrote: "The referee issued a red card to Durán for violent conduct. The VAR checked and confirmed the referee’s call."

Here's how fans on social media reacted.
One said: "Harsh I thought," and a second commented: "Never a sending off. When he steps on the defender, check his left foot sliding and unable to control his body."
A third wrote: "Can see why the referee would give that in real time. Don't think it's a red though."
A fourth said: "Seen players not walk for less than that Duran red, in real time I cannot for life of me see what he can do. Complete game changing decision," and a fifth added: "100% red card. Disgusting challenge."
Eddie Howe's Newcastle took an early lead through Anthony Gordon, who beat Emiliano Martinez with a superb curling effort from range. Villa, meanwhile, will likely feel hard done by after they went down to 10 men.
