In the weeks leading up to the Champions League final on Saturday, 28th of May it became ever more speculative whether Mohamed Salah would renew his contract which terminates in the summer of 2023, as the ambition of Liverpool Football Club loomed large on the shoulders of the Egyptian and his teammates.
Recently, it was reported that Salah has made a transfer ‘u-turn’ as he appeared to tell friends and family as well as the press ahead of the Champions League final that his intentions were to stay at Liverpool, however, it is now understood that a verbal agreement has been reached between Barcelona and the Liverpool forward, according to the Daily Mirror.
This verbal agreement from Barcelona comes following a new sponsorship deal with music streaming platform Spotify worth over £200M. This leads to thethinking Barca will have promised a highly lucrative wage bill for the Liverpool number 11 as an effort to try and lure him to the Camp Nou. It is also understood that the Anfield residers are not looking to up Salah’s wage bill if he is tempted by La Blaugrana, leaving the two European heavyweights in a standoff over the Egyptian. Despite Salah and Barca coming to a verbal agreement on an extravagant contract, whether Barcelona will genuinely be able to afford the talisman is another question as it was understood the club's debt amounted to €1.35bn (£1.16bn) as of August 2021.
