Jose Mourinho's verdict on Mason Mount will excite Manchester United fans

Mount is expected to join Erik ten Hag's side from Chelsea and their former manager was clearly impressed with the midfielder.

Manchester United fans may not have always loved Jose Mourinho but there's a good chance they'll be happy with his assessment of Mason Mount.

It might be a pretty annoying time for United fans as they patiently wait to find out if the takeover saga at Old Trafford is ever going to end.

They have of course perfected the art of the long drawn out buying process but it's usually related to their transfer targets rather than the entire club!

For once though some transfer activity might not be taking the entirety of the window, or the usual three windows that it often takes, with a move for Mount edging ever closer.

Whilst a striker was expected to be their top target before next season starts it's been clear that Erik ten Hag also wants to add a midfielder to his squad.

Mount appeared to be saying one final farewell to Stamford Bridge as a Blues player at the end of the previous season and fans are getting excited it'll soon happen, even reading too much into social media posts of people who aren't the player's fitness coach.

Maybe some fans aren't completely sure what they're getting with the signing of the former Derby County loanee but fortunately the club's former manager Mourinho is on hand.

Speaking about England's young players ahead of Euro 2020, the Special One said: "I believe he [Mount] is an attack-minded player, a creative player, but he has the tactical discipline," he told the Times.

"We see him now with [Thomas] Tuchel coming from the sides, when with Frank [Lampard] he was more of a No.10. When they play with a back five he can be the third attacking player or the third midfield player.

"I think he is very, very intelligent on the pitch. From what I see, he has a very good understanding of the game. He has goals, which is an important thing for a midfield player. I like him very much."

The 24-year-old is well known for his pressing from the front when he plays in more advanced roles, a trait that Ten Hag certainly likes.

United's manager is said to have first been impressed by the midfielder when he was on loan at Vitesse Arnhem in 2018, when the Dutchman was in charge at Ajax.

Vitesse won both games against the side from Amsterdam during that campaign and the Englishman then went on to join Derby County.

He could soon become the latest player to join United after impressing in the Netherlands, following the signings last year of Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Antony, Andre Onana could be the next one after Mount to join.
