Romano brands Man Utd transfer rumour "laughable" despite reports of 'done deal'

Romano brands Man Utd transfer rumour "laughable" despite reports of 'done deal'

Was this ever going to happen?

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has rubbished claims that Harry Maguire will join Aston Villa this January, with the England international expected to stay at Manchester United.

Maguire has endured a tricky campaign under Erik ten Hag, coming under heavy criticism following a poor start to the Red Devils' season which saw them lose to Brighton and Brentford in their opening two matches.

Despite playing a big part in England's World Cup campaign, the 29-year-old looks to have lost his place under Erik ten Hag, playing second fiddle to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

An assured performance against Bournemouth last week offered a glimmer of hope. However, the Manchester United boss preferred left-back Luke Shaw in central defence during their previous match against Wolves, indicating that he is yet to win back his manager's trust.

Maguire to Aston Villa

Out of favour, and with the captain's armband in serious jeopardy, it is no surprise that Maguire has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with Aston Villa reportedly his destination.

However, Fabrizio Romano was quick to shut the rumours down, insisting it had been denied by both clubs.

He stated: "Reports of Harry Maguire deal ‘done’ with Aston Villa are now denied by all parties involved," Romano wrote for Caught Offside.

"No negotiations or talks ongoing. Maguire is expected to stay at Man United, the position is very clear, they have not agreed any deal with any club.

"Let’s see if things change in the coming days, but the expectation is for him to stay, to carry on as club captain, and to be an important player for Erik ten Hag," he added.

A further report from Manchester Evening News labeled the rumours 'laughable', stating: "sources close to Maguire and United say they have found the feverish speculation laughable."

Gossip regarding a move to the Midlands club circulated when he was spotted in Birmingham over the weekend. Although, the report explained that "Maguire is believed to have gone to The Belfry to play golf".

For now, it seems as though Harry Maguire will remain at Old Trafford, and will have to fight for his place among stiff competition.
