David Beckham was one hell of a player. His innate ability to cross the ball was second to none in the footballing world and that's not forgetting of course some of those free kicks. As was befitting of the player his farewell to football was a little special.

On his birthday it's no wonder that people want to celebrate 'Becks' and the most apt way to do so seems to be saluting the free kick he scored for England that qualified them for the 2002 World Cup.

The goal in added on time against Greece was something extra special with the then Manchester United winger stepping up in injury time at Old Trafford with a goal that was very much needed for Sven Goran Eriksson's team.

The right winger would move to Real Madrid, where he won La Liga, before moving to LA Galaxy where his career at the top seemed over until a loan deal to AC Milan and a five month deal with Paris Saint-Germain would give him two last runs at the top.

In January 2013 the former England captain signed a five month deal to move to the French capital with his wages going to a local children's charity. On May 18th he played his final home game for the club, wearing the captain's armband.

In typical Beckham fashion he set up Blaise Matuidi from a corner and then on 80 minutes was removed from the pitch. The fans stood to give him one last ovation and every teammate hugged him farewell as Becks also embraced every member of the bench when he came off.

Beckham was classy all the way till the end.

Happy 42nd Birthday Becks, an icon of a generation.
