Fans stunned after Barcelona's asking price for Frenkie de Jong emerges ahead of January transfer window

Fans stunned after Barcelona's asking price for Frenkie de Jong emerges ahead of January transfer window

Barcelona are planning to sell Frenkie de Jong and fans can't believe the reported transfer fee.

Frenkie de Jong is reportedly up for sale and fans can't believe how much Barcelona are asking for ahead of the January transfer window.

De Jong, who joined Barca from Ajax in the summer of 2019, has fallen down the pecking order under Hansi Flick this season.

He's managed just six league appearances amid an injury-hit campaign.

Spanish outlet SPORT claim that the Catalan giants are prepared to offload the Dutch midfielder ahead of the transfer window reopening next month.

It's suggested that the club are open to accepting offers as low as €20 million.

He's contracted with Barcelona until 2026, but the club want to avoid a free transfer scenario as talks have stalled over an extension.

Amid the contract standoff between both parties, Barca are considering a transfer.

The reported asking price has stunned fans on social media as they couldn't believe the measly fee.

One X user wrote: "Absolute baller in the right team..."

A second tweeted: "Damn what could have been."

A third added: "He has to go, but 20M is too little, 50M minimum."

A fourth said: "That is absolutely horsesh*t and such a disgrace if Barcelona decide to sell this player for that much."

Another commented: "€20M is a crazy transfer fee."

De Jong signed for Barca in an initial transfer worth €75 million.

He arrived with plenty of promise following his stellar performances for Ajax, where he starred in the Champions League.

The 27-year-old was a regular at Barca until injury derailed his development.

Manchester United had been linked with the player when Erik ten Hag was in charge.

Speaking last month, Flick revealed that De Jong is 'not 100 per cent' fit despite his recent return to action.

"What I have to say is that he’s working very hard to get back. He’s not 100 per cent," he explained. "He needs to get back to his best level. I’m sure he’ll get there. We’ll keep an eye on him. Frenkie needs to recover a bit more, he might play on Saturday. The important thing is the whole team. We want all the players to get back to their best level."
