Kai Havertz left Chelsea for Arsenal last month

Arsenal’s summer signing Kai Havertz has been compared to England and Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.

Last month, it was confirmed that Havertz has joined Arsenal from Chelsea in a deal worth a reported £65 million.

The 24-year-old first arrived in English football from Bayer Leverkusen back in 2020.

Having cost Chelsea an initial fee of £62 million, Havertz struggled to showcase the kind of football he was producing in the Bundesliga.

Despite his struggles, the German did score the winner in the Champions League final against Manchester City in 2021.

Prior to his move to the Emirates, some Arsenal fans were concerned about whether Havertz is the right man for Mikel Arteta’s project.

However, former Wales and Liverpool player Dean Saunders has now compared Havertz to Lampard.

Whilst speaking on talkSPORT, Saunders said: “I look at Arsenal, you know, Martinelli on the left, Saka on the right, Jesus down the middle. Rice sitting, Havertz joining in with Martinelli down the left channel making runs.

“For me, Havertz is a bit like Lampard, like arriving in the box late, he can’t play with his back to goal.”

Saunders was then asked whether Havertz would be able to score as many goals as Lampard did.

He said: “No, he’s not as good as Frank Lampard, not many were.

“But in that position where Xhaka played, making runs, getting into the box, joining in and finding gaps, I think he will do well and you’ve got Odegaard on the other side.

“Back four looks good, goalkeeper Ramsdale looks good. I can’t see them losing many games next season.”

During his time with Chelsea, Havertz scored 32 goals in 139 appearances across all competitions.

Upon signing for the Gunners, Havertz said: “The mentality in the Arsenal squad is very high and you can feel that. That was one of the reasons why it has been so hard to play against Arsenal recently.

“The aim is to win trophies and I'm going to give everything to do that for the supporters and everyone at the club. I'm now looking forward to meeting all the players and the staff when we come back for pre-season.”
