Former England midfielder Joe Cole has slammed the critics of Mason Mount in a recent interview, after the Chelsea star received backlash online for his performances.
Cole was asked during an interview with Football Daily on YouTube whether the criticism directed at Mount was unfair.
The former Chelsea man said: “That’s the sign of the times in it, people don’t want to admit they were wrong.”

“Anyone who’s not having Mason Mount needs to have a look at themselves.”
Cole was then asked how Mount would do if they played in the same generation.
He replied: “He's more rounded. If we had a time machine and you put all them great players and you took them out and them back in our era, Mason would be the one that adjusts quicker.”
Chelsea fans have always supported Mount as he is regarded by them as one of the best players for club and country. But the 22-year-old is often the subject of criticism and in the worst case, abuse on social media.

Under the guidance of Frank Lampard in 2019, Mount successfully broke into the Chelsea first team squad after a fruitful loan under Lampard for Derby County.
Since then, he has been one of the most consistent performers for the Stamford Bridge club.
Mount was voted as Chelsea’s Player of The Season for the second season in a row. In the 21/22 campaign, Mount finished as the club’s top goal scorer in the Premier League with 11. He also achieved over 29 goal contributions over the course of the season across all competitions.
The peak of Mount’s criticism came after the player missed a crucial penalty against Liverpool in the FA Cup final in May.

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was seen consoling Mount after the match and quickly defended his England team mate, stating that Mount has the ‘world at his feet’.
Henderson said: “That is always a big thing for me. You’ve got to be respectful to the opponent, especially with players you play with from your national team.”
“You know how good they are and that they are good people, especially in penalty shootouts, it’s never nice for people to miss penalties.”
He added: “I knew he’d be feeling really down, and to be honest, he probably didn’t want me going over there thinking back, but I just wanted to give him a little bit of support because he’s a top player, a great lad, and he’s still very young.”

“He’s got the world at his feet, and I am sure he will bounce back. When he gets the opportunity again, he’ll step up and put the ball in the back of the net.”
