Brentford release statement after Ivan Toney receives a 'barrage of racist messages' following game against Arsenal

Ivan Toney scored in his side's 1-1 draw at Arsenal.

Brentford have released a strongly-worded statement after Ivan Toney received a 'barrage of racist messages' following their game at Arsenal.

Toney scored a controversial goal in his side's 1-1 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates on Saturday.

VAR forgot to draw the lines whilst checking the visitor's equalising goal following a lengthy review.

After the result, Toney was bombarded with vile messages on Instagram, with Brentford and the Premier League condemning the sickening abuse.

"Immediately after Brentford’s game against Arsenal, Ivan Toney received a barrage of abusive, racist direct messages via his Instagram account," the club's statement reads.

"We are disgusted and saddened that Ivan has had to deal with this yet again.

"We will not tolerate it and we will do everything we can to pursue the individuals involved.

"Ivan was subject to similar abuse in October last year, and the perpetrator is now facing the consequences in court.

"How many times does this need to happen?

"We call on football fans everywhere to relish the competition and rivalry that exists between us, but to respect and embrace our differences and celebrate the diversity that exists throughout the Premier League.

"There is no room for racism."

The league added: "No one should have to face abuse of the kind received by Ivan Toney. It has no place in football or society. We are supporting Ivan and the club with investigations.

"The Premier League condemns all forms of discrimination. Football is for everyone."

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Toney has been subjected to racist abuse. He was targeted by trolls during Brentford's 3-2 win at Goodison Park in May 2022.

The 26-year-old is enjoying a prolific campaign this season, having scored an impressive 14 league goals in 20 appearances.

Brentford currently occupy eighth place in the table, with 34 points on the board after picking up a point against the league leaders.
