Scotland star could’ve been playing for England at Euro 2024 and Gareth Southgate might’ve taken him

Scotland star could’ve been playing for England at Euro 2024 and Gareth Southgate might’ve taken him

Why is this Scotland star not playing for England at Euro 2024?

One Scotland star who was eligible to play for England could've been the answer to Gareth Southgate's problems at Euro 2024.

The Three Lions got off to a nervy start in Germany with a narrow victory over Serbia followed by a draw with Denmark.

Southgate opted to experiment with the side in both games by playing Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield.

Whilst he played well against Serbia, the lack of balance in the middle against Denmark was clear, and the 25-year-old was substituted midway through the second half.

It has left question marks over the options that the Three Lions have in that area, and there's one Scottish player who would have been a great addition to the team had he chosen to represent England.

As per The Sun, Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay chose to represent Scotland instead after being eligible to play for them through his father.

He was first selected for The Tartan Army back in 2018 and has gone on to become one of their most important players at Euro 2024.

In two games McTominay has scored Scotland's only goal, and his first at a major tournement, as they look to secure a final group victory over Hungary in the hope of progressing.

Given England's midfield struggles it's likely Southgate would have included McTominay in his final 26-man squad if he had chose not to play for Scotland.

The 27-year-old has also established himself as a key player for United having risen through the academy to appear over 100 times for the Red Devils.

Despite a poor campaign last season, he helped them beat their arch-rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Whilst it's unlikely he will ever lift silverware with Scotland, he can go down in history by helping them reach the knockout stages of a major tournement for the first time.
