Rob McElhenney hits out as new report reveals how much Wrexham are worth four years on from takeover

The American is co-owner of the League One side alongside his fellow actor, Ryan Reynolds.

Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney has hit back at a report about the club’s value - but it may be for a reason you wouldn't expect.

McElhenney, 47, and Ryan Reynolds, 48, completed their takeover of the then-fifth-tier club in February 2021 and have since overseen a successful run of back-to-back promotions, with the Red Dragons currently competing for a third consecutive promotion, which would see them progress to the Championship.

The town itself has reaped the rewards of the football team’s success. The heightened media attention surrounding the club has seen a huge increase in visitors, with 2,000,000 tourists having spent £179m in the city in 2023, supporting over 1,700 hospitality jobs.

The pair bought the club for around £2m ($2.6m), but it has increased in value by 4,900% to £100m, according to Fortune.

The outlet also reported that in the coming weeks, the club will reveal “that revenue for its last financial year more than doubled to over £20m”.

And despite the amount of progress made both on the pitch and financially, McElhenney hit back at Bloomberg’s report.

The headline of the piece was ‘Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham AFC is now worth 4,900% more at £100m,’ seemingly ignoring the fact that McElhenney also owns the club.

He posted a screenshot of the headline to X accompanied by a caption which read: “I cannot comment on the substance of the headline, but I have LOTS of comments on the editorial choices made here. LOTS.”

Fans also had their say on social media.

One said: "Now Rob, as a tried and true Philly guy, no way a NYC outlet like Bloomberg can give you any love."

Another added: "It's Ryan's world. We're just living in it. But not in pictures with him or ownership headlines with him."

A third explained: "So rude not mentioning or showing you Wrexham wouldn’t be as big as they are right now without you."

While a fourth joked: "Who's that guy trying to take the trophy from Ryan?"

Wrexham, who are currently third in League One, will return to action on March 8 as they are set to face Rotherham at the Racecourse Ground.
