Man Utd fans stunned by clause included in deal to sell Mason Greenwood as Marseille transfer nears

Man Utd fans stunned by clause included in deal to sell Mason Greenwood as Marseille transfer nears

United fans can't believe the deal the club has agreed to.

Manchester United fans have been stunned by the clause included in Mason Greenwood's imminent move to Marseille.

The Greenwood saga finally looks set to come to an end, with United and Ligue 1 side Marseille reportedly reaching an agreement.

The Premier League club will reportedly receive a package worth £26.6 million (€30m) for the 22-year-old attacker, who is set to fly to the south of France and undergo medical tests.

If Greenwood passes, then he will sign a contract valid until 2029.

Greenwood has not played for United since January 2022; later that month he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges just over a year later after key witnesses withdrew their involvement and "new material came to light."

After conducting their own internal investigation into Greenwood's conduct, United decided that it was better for both parties if the player continued his career away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood spent last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe, but United did not want to loan him out for a second summer in a row.

The deal with Marseille, now coached by former Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, includes a 50 per cent sell on clause.

As clarified by The Telegraph, the clause entitles United to up to 50 per cent of the profits from any future sale of Greenwood.

For example, if Marseille sell Greenwood for £50m, that would give the French club a profit of £23.4m. United would then be entitled to 50 per cent of that profit, which would be £11.7m.

United fans couldn't quite believe that their club had managed to insert such a large sell-on clause into the transfer agreement.

"Omar Berrada and co, y'all are geniuses..", one fan wrote on X, while another commented: "This is better anything the Glazers would have done."

A third fan simply said: "That's a great deal for United!"
